Autism and self-diagnosis

22 Oct

In the past few months, I have come to believe that I am probably autistic. I came to this conclusion based largely upon feedback from friends, and a bit of research online. I am very late to this realization, but the autistic community seems to mostly agree that self-diagnosis is valid. This is largely due to the extreme difficulty in obtaining an official diagnosis as an adult.

Hang On, This Will Get A Bit Heavy

21 Oct

When I was maybe 13, I had to get a “physical” exam because I was going to play middle school football. Right. Still masking, so ultra masculine activity. Anyway, I was referred, by a coach, to an older pediatrician that the team used regularly for said physicals.

I received the first of two in a series of Shingrix vaccines Tuesday 17-October. The actual vaccination was straightforward, and not at all unpleasant.

Southern move cancelled

17 Feb

We just received word that our offer to move in with the friend in Florida has been rescinded. No idea what we’ll do now but there’s certainly nothing we can do tonight.

Trekking Further South

3 Feb

My roommate and I have been couch surfing for several months. We’ve had significant difficulty finding a place in Metro Atlanta area. The market is horrendous in this area, and it likely doesn’t help that I’m openly trans. The current situation is untenable in the long term, and we need to get settled somewhere.

A mutual friend of ours in Daytona Beach reached out and suggested that we join her in Daytona Beach. I know. I can already hear you. Are you kidding? Florida⁉ DeSantis and the GOP? Believe me, I’ve been mulling this over for days. Honestly, it’s not much different than the political situation here in Georgia. We have Marjorie Taylor Greene. She’s worse than DeSantis, in my opinion.

Anyway, it’s the only long term offer we’ve gotten. And when her current lease is up, the three of us plan to get a house together. Think a reboot of The Golden Girls. Wish us luck. We may very well need it. Blessed Be.

Spoonie News – Seizure?

2 Nov

I apparently had another seizure early this morning. I spent at least six hours in a severe postictal state. Most of that time was spent essentially unconscious (very deep sleep). It was around 3 pm before I woke and felt mostly normal. I still have a bit of a headache, but that’s normal for me.

During the time I was conscious this morning, I was nauseous, vomiting, and so dizzy I could barely stand. Actually I couldn’t sit either, not even long enough to urinate. As soon as I got back to horizontal, and in bed, the dizziness, etc. stopped and I passed out within minutes.

No, I didn’t call the neurologist. He didn’t even respond to my call to the nurse back on June 5-6 when nearly the exact same thing happened. At least today I didn’t injure myself from convulsions. I have no memory of the seizure itself, but that too is normal for me. I never remember anything but the postictal period.

I didn’t feel like eating after I finally woke up, so today was a fasting day. I drank about 2/3 a normal day’s water. I’ll be going back to sleep relatively soon. I’m in bed with lights out while I type this.

I promise, I’m okay. Just another fun day in spoonie land.

Spoonie news – Chronic Kidney Disease

9 Sep

Approximately three weeks ago, I was informed that my kidney function was “low”. There was a repeat test which confirmed that my eGFR was 51. That number suggests a possibility of early Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Because of the possibility of them contributing to that condition, I have been told to discontinue all NSAID medications. I had been using a prescription NSAID for a couple of years now to control fibromyalgia pain.

The good news, I guess, is that the flares so far since this change have been mild, though more frequent than previously. It was suggested to me that I use Extra Strength Tylenol. That’s slightly better than Skittles. But if I must accept the return of fibro pain on a regular basis in order to support kidney function, then that is what I shall do.

This past week, my PCP reached out to recommend a follow up visit in early February on this topic. My reading on the Internet suggests three months would be more common, but since this is apparently a mild case, I suppose a couple of extra months is no big deal.

So mote it be.
