I assume you read this blog because you care about trans rights. At the very least, you are not hostile to women like me. As such, I have a favor to ask of you.
You may or may not be aware. The very first openly transgender person was elected to the House of Representatives in this past election cycle. Sarah McBride was elected to Congress to represent the state of Delaware in an at-large House district. The people of Delaware believe she is a good choice to represent their interests in Congress.
Unfortunately, the Republicans in the House have seen fit to disrespect her in a truly nasty way. They have decided to bring a transgender bathroom ban to the halls of Congress. This disgusting turn of events began with Nancy Mace of South Carolina. She introduced a resolution this week. It would ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms and other facilities at the Capitol. She has said that the bill “absolutely” targets Rep.-elect Sarah McBride. House Speaker Mike Johnson has voiced support for this move.
Sadly, among the Democratic caucus, only Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has had the courage to speak out forcefully. A few others have joined her in opposing this move. It simply has not received the widespread condemnation that is so resoundingly deserved.
Now to that favor I mentioned. Today, there is a petition circulating. It allows cisgender women to state that they are opposed to such actions “in their names.” As I write this, almost 2700 cis women have signed the petition. It needs many more signatures. I ask you to sign this petition.
Share it with like minded women who also are unafraid of transgender women in “women’s spaces.” I’m providing a link to the petition below, with the exact title given to it.

I assume that even if it were to permit a signature from outside the US, it wouldn’t carry any weight. Not really sure how much weight a signature from within the US will carry. Thank you though, and have a great rest of your day!

Its about organising and solidarity. Because all women will be losers under a hard-right fascist government. And these governments are coming world wide. If it’s signaturs or actions it doesn’t matter. What matters is that we stand up for each other with the means that we have and the actions we are able to do.

I can recall, though, that the Sharing line, where I usually see Press This, was shorter last night, and began with Mastodon. That might have even caught my attention, because of the coloring of the Mastodon button, before I clicked where the Reblog button wasn’t! 🙂 Anyway, all’s well that ends well.

Okay, that’s just weird. The “Press This” button is there, if you are signed in. But the “Reblog” button is not. Vice versa if you are not signed in. WP just can’t make anything easy. Ugh.

Hi. Great post Janet. Sadly I can not sign because I am male. But I am a very strong supporter of trans rights for a long time. Just let me know if there is anything I can do to be more supportive or help push pro-trans rights. I have always felt trans rights are human rights! Hugs

A cis female friend on Facebook asked how she could make things better for me. I’ll quote it here. Adjust it for your gender. 🫂
“How can you (or any cis person) make things better for me? Besides accepting me as who I am, which anyone reading this already does? Advocate for my humanity. Nothing big necessarily. Just, when you hear a friend disparage people like me, say something. Tell them you know trans people, and they are just like everyone else. Trans women are no danger to cis women. Use your privilege to get others to think about my humanity.
Importantly, do that all the time. Not just during Transgender Awareness. Do it any time the opportunity presents itself. Because ultimately, the only thing that can possibly change the world for the better is for the good people to speak up and let it be known that bigotry (all bigotry, not just against trans people) is unacceptable. And that only works if it comes from the privileged ones. The ones who don’t face oppression for a given minority trait. As a cis woman, you know how powerful it can be for a good man to say “WTF Dude!?! That’s not okay!” You can do that too, for women like me.”
