I finally received all the necessary paperwork that I needed to get my driver’s license transferred to my new home state. The birth certificate, which was the big holdup, arrived on Monday.
I went down to the DMV office this morning, armed with all the documents. I had my prior ID from Georgia, my brand new Social Security card, and the birth certificate. I am legal to drive again. My Georgia license expired while I was waiting for that birth certificate.
The big news, though, is that I was able to change the gender marker on my ID. It was a simple matter of checking a preference on the application form. For the first time ever, I have official ID that says “F” for the gender marker! I knew that was possible in a few blue states, but I’m in a so-called “swing state.”
In case you don’t know, this is absolutely a huge deal for a trans person to have the correct gender marker on their ID. It’s one of those days you mark on the calendar. And it’s not consistent as to what has to be done to do that. It varies widely by state. In some states, you even have to give proof of gender confirming surgery to make this change.
In this state, it’s a check box on an application form. And no, I’m still not willing to say what state I live in. At least, not in a public forum like a blog. If you know, you know.
The journey continues. But as for today? A big dose of trans joy goes with that journey.
Woot! That’s gotta make getting out of the house at least a little less stressful! I’m so very happy for you, and glad you’re validated in that way. It is a big deal.
