Good news
28 Janlasarina is returning to the LTAC tomorrow. That means she is stable enough that they can’t keep her in this hospital. The surgeon has agreed to move forward. Her new surgery date is 8-Feb-2010.

Found out why I was wrong about the antibiotics
27 Janlasarina was diagnosed with strep in her PICC line. So the plan to change the antibiotics changed with the new data. She’s comfortable enough right now. The surgeon has been really put off by this, so energies toward that would be very welcome.

Progress
26 Janlasarina is out of the IMU and into a regular room. She has been changed from IV antibiotics to oral ones. Still hoping to get the surgery done during this admission. Don’t know when we will have another date.
ETA: I seem to have misunderstood the part about antibiotics. They just hung more IV ones. (27-Jan 10:15AM CT)

Strange synchronicity [Transgender]
25 JanToday, my first-born child came out as a transgender woman (on Facebook, as Melody Jade) in Houston on the same day as the vigil. (http://bit.ly/5A0fKw) Jade didn’t know about me.
I had told Laura, who I see fairly regularly, and I did not tell Laura she could not tell Jade. When they were growing up, I was presenting male entirely. Their mother knew I sometimes cross-dressed, and had apparently guessed I might be transgender.
Jade was worried that I would freak out. Instead, I provided resource information to get her started on her transition. I know Houston relatively well, and had been doing research for my own benefit.
Wow.
This morning’s update
24 JanYes, I know it isn’t technically morning any more. But if you had been up until almost 3 am, you would be running a bit behind too.
The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. OK, slight exaggeration. Still… I woke up at about 6:15 am to a commotion here in lasarina‘s room. They were trying to draw arterial blood, I think. I was pretty drowsy. She had spiked a fever of 101.3, and they needed blood for cultures. Can you guess where this is going?
Yep, more sepsis. PICC line will be removed as soon as they can find a surgeon to place a central line to replace it. Surgery tomorrow? Not with sepsis active. Postponed, again. Her attending says that this time, he is not going to let them send her back to Kindred between now and whatever new surgical date we get. He’s going to get this cleared up quickly, and get her back on the surgical schedule. I hope he can do just that.
Damn it, we are getting really tired of this.
