Deepwater Horizon: If you aren’t pissed, you aren’t paying attention

Jason Anderson of Texas made extensive plans for his family in the weeks before the Deepwater Horizon accident. He was preparing in case of his death, according to his wife, because he was that worried about the safety of the rig.
“They were getting pressure from someplace higher up to do things that maybe weren’t exactly the way Jason thought that they should be,” [Jason’s wife] said. “It was a safety issue.”
“Jason’s father told us Jason was concerned that BP, which controlled the rig, kept wanting to stray from procedures to finish the well faster, which Jason considered unsafe,” [NBC’s Lisa] Myers reported.
I said it before
It’s time we remember the dead, and start to discuss the value of human life. The ecological damage is terrible, but so is the blatant disregard for the life of those roughnecks.
The more I hear about how this rig was [mis-]managed, the more I believe that it is time for the corporate death penalty. What do you think?

Toxoplasmosis affects human behavior? Maybe.
3 JunToxoplasmosis and psychology: A game of cat and mouse
One reason to suspect this is that a country’s level of Toxoplasma infection seems to be related to the level of neuroticism displayed by its population. Another is that those infected seem to have poor reaction times and are more likely to be involved in road accidents. A third is that they have short attention spans and little interest in seeking out novelty. A fourth, possibly the most worrying, is that those who suffer from schizophrenia are more likely than those who do not to have been exposed to Toxoplasma.
Apparently, the protozoa known as Toxoplasma gondii carries genes for the production of dopamine, which serves no purpose to single celled organisms. It does have significant effects in higher organisms, such as humans, and cats.
Cats transmit toxoplasmosis to rats and mice. It seems that this disease then causes rodents to behave in self-destructive ways, which includes being attracted to the scent of cats. Toxoplasmosis needs infected rodents to be consumed by cats so that it can continue its life cycle. Now the fact that this disease affects rodents in a way that promotes its own life-cycle is nothing short of amazing to me. Continue reading

The Golden Girls made a woman of Rue McClanahan.
McClanahan—who earned an Emmy along with, by her own assessment, a measure of courage playing Blanche Devereaux, the lustiest member of the sitcom classic’s retiree quartet—died early today from what was termed a massive stroke. She was 76.
