Tilly Bridges Analyzes Ad Astra Per Aspera

I would encourage you to check out this post from Tilly Bridges. Her analyses of trans allegory in popular media are always fascinating! This one is absolutely spot on. For anyone not in the know: ‘Per aspera ad astra is a Latin phrase that translates literally as “through asperities (hardships, adversities, rigours) to the stars.”‘ (Wikipedia) Thus, Ad astra per aspera would roughly translate to “To the stars through adversity.”

Tilly promises a three-part series on the topic of this episode of Strange New Worlds. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

Lessons Learned from Our Pennsylvania Excursion

Last week Jenni and I took off on Wednesday 23-April on an excursion to Pennsylvania. We went to gather my belongings from the home where I had taken refuge after that domestic assault in early 2024. It was an interesting trip. On the way there, our navigation app decided, on it’s own, to “Avoid Tolls.” We didn’t realize that had happened until we had already spent an extra hour driving back roads. We had assumed it was rerouting us to detour around some obstacle. By the time we realized what had happened and turned off that option, we were another extra hour getting back to the optimal route.

Successful debugging

A little while ago, I joined the élite ranks of those few who have literally debugged a system. It seems that the garage door here wouldn’t close properly. From the symptoms, I knew it was a problem with the infrared detector system believing something was in the doorway. After some testing, I was able to confirm my diagnosis.

Switching Off Comcast

I did some research, and this past week I shut off Comcast Cable / Internet. I’ve had ongoing issues with the quality of service, as well as consistency of service and pricing. Over the last several months, my bill hadn’t been the same amount two months in a row, and I wasn’t buying pay-per-view. Oh, it only varied a few dollars from month to month, but I could never explain why it varied at all. There were frequent service interruptions, both on TV and internet, but almost never both at the same time. Continue reading →
