Every time there’s a mass shooting in the US, my trans friends and I hold our collective breath. If the shooter turns out to be trans, it could signal the final days of our human rights in a country that is supposed to be a shining beacon on the hill for freedom. Trans people are rarely responsible for these mass shootings, but it does sometimes happen. There are disturbed people in every demographic, of course, but conservative white men are responsible for the overwhelming majority of mass shootings.

Missouri’s Gender-Affirming Care and Abortion Rights: A Dangerous Alliance

This is beyond the pale. Missouri plans to use gender-affirming care (GAC) for minors to overturn the hard-won right of abortion for women in Missouri. Citizens approved a constitutional right to reproductive freedom in November of last year. The far-right legislature thinks they’ve found a way to hurt trans people and overturn that right in one fell swoop.

Departing sharply from Maine’s support of trans people, Missouri’s state congress is making moves to harm trans people and pregnant people!

The marrying of prohibition on GAC and repealing of abortion rights is, undeniably, an attempt to push fence sitters into agreeing to a measure they might not typically approve of. Amendment 3 won by the narrowest of margins, and ensuring that those who oppose these life-saving treatments for trans kids must also tacitly bless an abortion ban is transparent political maneuvering of the nastiest kind.

Transphobic UK Bigots and Mastectomy Survivors

The UK Supreme Court ruling excluded trans women from the legal definition of a woman. This decision has emboldened anti-trans bigots. They are viciously attacking any woman who doesn’t meet their standards of femininity, including breast cancer survivors.

Tilly Bridges Analyzes Ad Astra Per Aspera

I would encourage you to check out this post from Tilly Bridges. Her analyses of trans allegory in popular media are always fascinating! This one is absolutely spot on. For anyone not in the know: ‘Per aspera ad astra is a Latin phrase that translates literally as “through asperities (hardships, adversities, rigours) to the stars.”‘ (Wikipedia) Thus, Ad astra per aspera would roughly translate to “To the stars through adversity.”

Tilly promises a three-part series on the topic of this episode of Strange New Worlds. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

Due Process applies to everyone, or it applies to no one. If they can do this to American citizens of Latino descent, what stops them from doing the same to you? Are you cis-het, white, and male? No? Then you could be next.

I personally have remained active in the community since my transition back in late 2010. But I know many of the “elders” have gone stealth, and I understand that desire. I agree with Moriel though. Our community needs us. And we need them, especially now.

Excerpt from the post:

Today, though, there is an international movement to oppress us through the law and we are attacked nearly every day by transphobic politicians and activists. Today’s generation of people just coming to terms with their gender face a very hostile environment and have difficult obstacles to overcome. That is why I got back in touch with the trans community a few years ago after being absent from it for two decades.

Trans elders: You are needed!
