Welcome to my adventures

I will occasionally post here about being a 50+ non-op transwoman. I am somewhat closeted, in that I am not out at work.

When Politicians Set Curriculum Standards …

15 May

Everyone loses when politicians set the curriculm standards, especially when those politicians are far right wing ideologues from deep East Texas. And when I say everyone, I don’t just mean everyone in Texas. Continue reading

Discrimination is NOT necessary

EDITORIAL: Discrimination is necessary – Washington Times

First-graders should not be forced into the classrooms of teachers undergoing sex changes. Religious broadcasters and faith-based summer camps should not be forced to hire cross-dressers. Women should not be forced to share bathrooms with people with male body parts who say they want to be females. Yet those are some of the likely results if Congress passes H.R. 3017, the so-called Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which is due for a vote this week by the House Education and Labor Committee.

Wow. That is the most ill-informed, bigoted, nasty paragraph I have read today. I note with particular interest that the target of the bigotry in this ill-conceived editorial is exclusively transgender people. Apparently gays and lesbians are no longer frightening enough for the Washington Times.

Let’s leave aside the fact that the APA is currently revising the DSM, and may change the definition of Gender Identity Disorder (GID). Should we also discriminate against bi-polar disorder patients who are receiving treatment, and prevent them from teaching our children? After all, their disorder is also listed in the DSM. What about people with depression? Should they use a different bathroom? Oh, I know what you are going to say. Those disorders pose no risk. Really? Ever heard of Columbine? Risk is a part of life. Strange synchronicity [Transgender]

25 Jan

Today, my first-born child came out as a transgender woman (on Facebook, as Melody Jade) in Houston on the same day as the vigil. (http://bit.ly/5A0fKw) Jade didn’t know about me.

I had told Laura, who I see fairly regularly, and I did not tell Laura she could not tell Jade. When they were growing up, I was presenting male entirely. Their mother knew I sometimes cross-dressed, and had apparently guessed I might be transgender.

Jade was worried that I would freak out. Instead, I provided resource information to get her started on her transition. I know Houston relatively well, and had been doing research for my own benefit.

Wow.

[CD / TG] Announcement

13 Mar

I am finally able to admit to myself that I am transgendered. I am slowly coming out to various very close friends about my status. So far, those I have told have been quite supportive, with one particular exception, who shall remain nameless. lasarina has been my most ardent supporter, and I am incredibly grateful that I have her in my life.

I will not come out to some people, though I am choosing to live primarily as Janet Anne. If you can see this, you already know all of what I just wrote. What you may not know is who else does. Unless you have been told otherwise, assume that no one else knows. I will, in my own time, slowly become more open about this.

This was not an easy thing for me to admit, even to myself. It has taken many years of self examination, and frequently self-denial, for me to come to this point. From my earliest memories of recognizing the differences between girls and boys, and most especially from puberty, I felt like I was “wrong” somehow.

I believe that you each know that gender and sexual orientation are not determinate one of the other. Suffice it to say that this announcement doesn’t imply in any way that my relationship with lasarina is changing, except to become stronger. She has been my rock through this latest phase of my development.

ETA: I have a Twitter account for Janet Anne here.
