Criticizing President Obama Is Pragmatic

Professor Hutchinson makes some salient points in the post above. If you are one of those inclined to tell me I should just accept whatever President Obama puts out there, read this.

Untermensch – Suspected enemy combatants not legally persons

21 Dec

For those of you not on Twitter, this one is worthy of your notice, no matter your opinion of Twitter.

@wyldraven: Dred Scott Redux: Obama and the Supremes Stand Up for Slavery – http://bit.ly/8ZN5SD // I am deeply saddened and disturbed by this outcome.

Allow me to refer you to this post I made on Livejournal back on 12-Jan-2008. In that post, I promised to keep an eye out for the final outcome of the untermensch case, as I referred to it back then. William Fisher (via Chris Floyd above) accurately notes the similarity to Dred Scott. In either case, we have crossed a very disturbing threshold in our handling of the so-called “War on Terror”. As you will note in the article linked above, this decision is

[…] introducing a shocking new precedent for all future courts to follow: anyone who is arbitrarily declared a “suspected enemy combatant” by the president or his designated minions is no longer a “person.” They will simply cease to exist as a legal entity.

Now, by matter of comparison, I would note that every corporation in this country enjoys legal personhood.

And tomorrow, my friends, it could be you that is declared untermensch. Remember that as you decide whether to protest the next outrageous act of this “government” we claim as a democracy. That’s the point, you know. You are supposed to fear the government. On that note, allow me to quote someone with whom you are probably familiar:

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
Thomas Jefferson

On the road again…

17 Dec

lasarina is currently undergoing the last planned preoperative test. She has already been evaluated by Kindred, and we have been informed that she will return to the LTAC as soon as all the paperwork is in order, which will be likely tomorrow or Saturday. Then it’s going to be “sit and wait” for a surgery date to be scheduled. That will likely be after the New Year starts.

[Transgender] Strange dreams

Rather than re-post the whole thing here, I am simply going to direct you to http://janetanne.dreamwidth.org/4965.html . If you choose to comment there, and don’t have a DW account, you can login with your LJ account using OpenID. If you want a DW account, let me know. I have invites available.

What’s next on the agenda

12 Dec

First, we all need to wish lasarina a very happy birthday today! I am far too much the gentleman to say how old she is, so don’t even ask!

And now that the staph infection is coming under control, and her probable surgery date is therefore after the New Year, we’ve been told that lasarina will probably have to go back to the LTAC for the remainder of this year. It’s an issue of “not sick enough to stay at acute care hospital” under insurance guidelines for that interim. We don’t know exactly when that will happen, but it’s most likely going to be sometime next week. So, really, nothing surprising in that.

She did get some really good news last night though. Her surgeon dropped by …

Moving again sometime today

7 Dec

lasarina has been upgraded to a status that “no longer meets the criteria for the unit” and will thus move back to a regular floor sometime today. There is another test they want to do today as well, but the outcome of that won’t affect her move out of IMU.

Barbara update

5 Dec

Moving to MIMU (Medical Intermediate Unit, one step off of ICU) today after stat CT of abdomen and stat chest x-ray. Gram positive sepsis. Source undetermined as of yet. CT to rule out another intestinal rupture. May also be PICC infection.

Situation not critical, but definitely no longer stable either. Prayers, etc please.

ETA: She will be in MIMU Bed 1 if you want to send e-greetings.

Barbara update – minor setback

4 Dec

Barbara (lasarina) woke up around 7 am to a fever of 103.7, pulse 161, BP 138/70. She was shivering uncontrollably, and complaining of chills. Rapid response team got the situation under control in a little over an hour. Thought for a while she was headed to ICU, but she’s still in the same room. The immediate crisis has been averted, but she is still running a fever of around 102. They’ve taken blood cultures.

We suspect PICC line infection, which is a common side affect of TPN. Started two IV antibiotics (Vanco and one other I’m not familiar with). That puts surgery out of the question for probably at least another week. Sometimes it seems like the old saw of “Two steps forward, one step back” has it reversed. This feels like it’s going to be one of those days.

Thanks to everyone for the e-cards. They have helped lift her spirits a lot.
