Are we on the brink of another Civil War?

28 Apr

Driving in this morning, looking at the scary bumper stickers on the monster pickup trucks and SUVs, this Progressive Texan (yes, we exist) was contemplating the dangerous seditious rhetoric originating from the Far Right. I have to admit I was seriously considering whether I need to move my family out of the “Southern States” before the Confederacy rises again. Continue reading

I hate our “healthcare system”

28 Apr

So Barbara is being down-graded to a lower level of care. I suspected that the decision was not so much a clinical decision as a monetary one. I got absolute confirmation that it is not a purely clinical decision just this morning. Her doctor thought we had at least six days. This morning he was informed that “No, the deadline is tomorrow”. He is PO’ed. He is refusing to write the transfer order.

As far as he is concerned, he wasn’t given enough time to prepare for this level of care change (including narcotic weaning, among other things) and “They [the LTAC] have made plenty of money off her these many months, they can eat a few days” while he gets her ready in an appropriate manner.

I like this doctor. He doesn’t work for the facility directly, and can therefore buck their decision on this. And luckily, he is in a mood to do so.

Latest on Barbara’s Recovery

27 Apr

Today we were informed that she is not sick enough to stay at the LTAC. Unfortunately, she is also not well enough to come home, or even to go to acute rehab. She simply isn’t strong enough for either option. So, she has to go to a skilled nursing facility (SNF). For those not in the know, SNF is the politically correct term for a nursing home.

This decision is being driven entirely by the insurance company. SNFs are less expensive than the LTAC. Continue reading

Discrimination is NOT necessary

26 Apr

EDITORIAL: Discrimination is necessary – Washington Times

First-graders should not be forced into the classrooms of teachers undergoing sex changes. Religious broadcasters and faith-based summer camps should not be forced to hire cross-dressers. Women should not be forced to share bathrooms with people with male body parts who say they want to be females. Yet those are some of the likely results if Congress passes H.R. 3017, the so-called Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which is due for a vote this week by the House Education and Labor Committee.

Wow. That is the most ill-informed, bigoted, nasty paragraph I have read today. I note with particular interest that the target of the bigotry in this ill-conceived editorial is exclusively transgender people. Apparently gays and lesbians are no longer frightening enough for the Washington Times.

Let’s leave aside the fact that the APA is currently revising the DSM, and may change the definition of Gender Identity Disorder (GID). Should we also discriminate against bi-polar disorder patients who are receiving treatment, and prevent them from teaching our children? After all, their disorder is also listed in the DSM. What about people with depression? Should they use a different bathroom? Oh, I know what you are going to say. Those disorders pose no risk. Really? Ever heard of Columbine? Risk is a part of life. Talk about an understatement… PBS admits ignoring single payer was a mistake

26 Apr

Healthcare-NOW! – PBS ombudsman: Ignoring single payer was a mistake

Yes, PBS Frontline erred by not covering single payer in their program Obama’s Deal. More importantly, in my mind, they erred significantly in the manner of editing the interview with Dr. Flowers of PHNP. Continue reading

Barbara and her relationship with food

25 Apr

Barbara really took to heart the threat of tube feeding. Almost overnight she went from picking at her food to pretty much cleaning her plate at every meal. She really turned her nose up at the liquid supplements too.

She even asked for, and ate, most of a foot-long Subway Club yesterday (no veggies, just meat, cheese, bread). She was still able to eat most of her breakfast today. So that’s very significant progress. Doctor has even started talking about acute rehab in the next couple of weeks.

Semi-regular update on Barbara

22 Apr

Today, Barbara’s doctor ordered the end of the TPN. Not because she’s eating enough yet. She’s not. Rather it is because the risk of infection is simply too great on that stuff. Eliminating it was the main justification for this surgery in the first place.

So what now? Continue reading

Barbara update

20 Apr

Moving to roughly weekly on the updates, as not much is changing right now. Surgical site is healing well. She’s still finding eating to be difficult, and because of that, is still on supplemental Parenteral nutrition. Her stomach apparently shrunk a lot. So besides the tummy tuck, this whole incident also gave her the same effect as a gastric band.

Barbara update

13 Apr

I’m with her today at the LTAC. She’s eating a little, but not enough to provide sufficient nutrition. Doctor has put her back on TPN (supplemental). She’s still allowed an unrestricted diet. We ate lunch together today for the first time since 6-Aug-09. Baby steps.
