The US government, under the current administration, is endeavoring to erase transgender people from current life, and to erase our existence from history. The erasure began day one of this administration with various anti-transgender Executive Orders. It continues to this day.
The latest assault on reality occurred this week with the erasure of trans and queer people from the National Park Service website about the Stonewall National Monument, the site generally considered to be the birthplace of the Gay Rights movement. It’s important to know, though, that the first people to stand up to the cops that day (28-June-1969) were two transgender women. Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were instrumental in forming the movement that began that day with Marsha throwing a brick.
There is much more to say about this erasure. I’ll let the statement from GLAAD speak for me on the details.
“The decision to change “LGBTQ” to “LGB” on the Stonewall National Monument page is yet another example of the Trump administration’s blatant attempts to discriminate against and erase the legacies of transgender and queer Americans. The Stonewall Uprising – a monumental moment in the fight for LGBTQ rights – would not have happened without the leadership of transgender and gender non-conforming people. The tireless work of Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and countless other trans women of color paved the way and continue to inspire us. You can try to erase our history, but we will never forget those who came before us and we will continue to fight for all those who will come after us.”
I also want to bring attention to this piece from Assigned Media. As Riki Wilchens notes: “In sum, I think they are afraid of us.” The reason for erasing us is that we threaten them. Our existence proves that you can rebel against authoritarianism and be joyous. Do go read their excellent piece. Until then, the journey continues.
At Stonewall, Erasing Trans History Reflects Bigotry’s Losing Hand — Assigned
It’s so awful. And it’s not lost on me that they love to argue that trans people didn’t used to exist, that it’s a new made-up ideology of the past 20 years. Not that trans and non-binary people have been existing since forever. This to me is a sign that they want to erase people from the history books to “prove” their point.
