Last week, Julia Serrano proposed an action for anyone with a social media platform who supports LGBT people. It was intended let Democrats in Congress know how disappointed we are in their failure to stand up for us. Today I am taking part in that action.
She suggested that I should
implore people to contact their Congressperson and Senators (and perhaps even local politicians) and tell them that 1) you will not tolerate any backpedaling on LGBTQ+ rights whatsoever, and 2) if they fail to strongly stand up against these attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, then you will take your vote elsewhere next election.
I believe that you already know how I currently feel about the Democratic party. They constantly appease the fascist, Christian Nationalist party of Republicans. The Republican standard bearer and his cabinet selections are utterly disgusting. Their attacks on transgender people of all ages are terrifying. And the Democratic party in great number seem willing to ignore these attacks.
They appear entirely unable to recognize the “canary in the coal mine” that is my community. Anything you are willing to accept directed at one minority will most certainly be aimed at another at some point. The mindset that requires an enemy to validate themselves will always find another when the first is trampled. Whether that first be immigrants, or women who require reproductive care, or transgender youth. I suggest you reread “First They Came” by Pastor Martin Niemöller.
So yes, I implore you. Call or write to your representatives in Congress, particularly if they are in the Democratic party. Let them know that this is unacceptable. Tell them you will not vote for cowards. These are the ones who “did not speak out” when they came for your neighbors. Appeasement and collaboration are not how we will win this battle.
The journey continues.
