Barbara is breathing on her own with CPAP support. She has been upgraded to light sedation. Small steps, but good ones.

27 MarDaily Kos: Health Care Reform: My Number One Issue [Redux]
It’s been about 15 months since I wrote Health Care Reform: My Number One Issue, and I have many times thought, “just a little while longer and I will write the epilogue to that story”. Today, I am still not writing the epilogue, because the story still isn’t over. Back then, I didn’t feel comfortable telling the details of what had happened to her, because I didn’t have her permission, and she was really in no condition to give it.

Post surgery pneumonia
27 Marlasarina has pneumonia. She’s running a low grade fever. Vitals are strong. She is on IV antibiotics (abx for short). She will remain intubated and sedated again today. Time to settle in for a long haul. This is a minimum of 7-10 days in my experience with her.

Post surgery day 1
26 MarBarbara has a low grade fever and elevated white blood cell count. After such a major surgery, I understand this is not an uncommon response. As a result though, they are being cautious and keeping her intubated and sedated. It’s frustrating, because I am so ready to tell her how great she did!

Final Barbara update for the night
25 MarThe surgery was utterly complication free, and could not possibly have gone better. It was long, about seven or so hours. Because of the lateness of the completion time, the decision was made to leave her intubated for the night, and save the stress of extubation for the morning. Thanks to all for your concern, good thoughts, prayers, and workings. I’m beat, and gonna go fall on my face for a few hours in a nearby hotel.

25 MarShe left for the OR about 11:05 am. The surgery is a long procedure. Shortest estimate I have heard is 6 hours. Longest was potentially 10 hours.
