And more from the other side of the looking glass:
Just last month, President Bush signed into law a bill that never passed the House. The bill — in this case, a major budget-cutting measure that will affect millions of Americans — became a law because it was “certified” by the leaders of the House and Senate.
Did these people never see Schoolhouse Rock?
Group sues to block budget law that never passed House
Has it really come to this? By Presidential decree, the budget is slashed? The Constitution used once again for toilet paper? If the 2006 elections don’t turn the bums out, I fear there may not be a 2008 election.
EDIT: Read more at the Public Citizen website here.
OK, Yes, I know it’s a nit, at least on the surface. But if we let this get by, it creates precedent. Then what will the next bill not passed by both houses look like?
A friend in Kansas (yeah I feel sorry for her too) just directed me to this Flash intro (titled “Evolution is a fairy tale for grownups”) to “Answers In Genesis”. Apparently, they now have at least one billboard up in Olathe (a suburb of Kansas City) directing people to the Science Proves It site.
The ability these people have to make spurious arguments, and to twist logic, is amazing. It’s just bizarre. When did we pass through the looking glass?

EDIT: I’ve found a photo of the offending billboard here. I found it through DefCon here.
Attempt to ban The Handmaid’s Tale in San Antonio TX fails, for now.
Lyman said Thursday that he believed to book does not meet community standards. He said he would not want his own children to read the book.
More here.
Superintendent Ed Lyman pulled the book, saying it was too explicit for high school students.
Personally, I am convinced this is why it got pulled in the first place. Highlighting mine.
The Handmaid’s Tale centers on a fundamentalist Christian group that forces women to act as sex slaves. Those who sided with Lyman feel the book is sexually explicit and offensive to Christians.
This was an advanced placement English curriculum. These high school students were doing college level work for college credit. You simply cannot ban the material that is covered on the AP English course, if you offer it. The students will pay to take the test, and the score determines their college credit. Fail the test, you don’t get the college credit.
This one bears watching.
