Moving again sometime today

7 Dec

lasarina has been upgraded to a status that “no longer meets the criteria for the unit” and will thus move back to a regular floor sometime today. There is another test they want to do today as well, but the outcome of that won’t affect her move out of IMU.

Barbara update

5 Dec

Moving to MIMU (Medical Intermediate Unit, one step off of ICU) today after stat CT of abdomen and stat chest x-ray. Gram positive sepsis. Source undetermined as of yet. CT to rule out another intestinal rupture. May also be PICC infection.

Situation not critical, but definitely no longer stable either. Prayers, etc please.

ETA: She will be in MIMU Bed 1 if you want to send e-greetings.

Barbara update – minor setback

4 Dec

Barbara (lasarina) woke up around 7 am to a fever of 103.7, pulse 161, BP 138/70. She was shivering uncontrollably, and complaining of chills. Rapid response team got the situation under control in a little over an hour. Thought for a while she was headed to ICU, but she’s still in the same room. The immediate crisis has been averted, but she is still running a fever of around 102. They’ve taken blood cultures.

We suspect PICC line infection, which is a common side affect of TPN. Started two IV antibiotics (Vanco and one other I’m not familiar with). That puts surgery out of the question for probably at least another week. Sometimes it seems like the old saw of “Two steps forward, one step back” has it reversed. This feels like it’s going to be one of those days.

Thanks to everyone for the e-cards. They have helped lift her spirits a lot.

Barbara is at the hospital being readied for her surgery

28 Nov

lasarina transferred over to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center late Monday evening. She is here for pre-operative clearances. If all goes as expected, she will have surgery to close the abdominal fistulas and her surgical wound sometime within the next 10 days to 2 weeks. She’s in her 16th week on TPN (while taking no food by mouth), and is really looking forward to eating again.

No matter how much you tell yourself (intellectually) that you are getting all the nutrition you need through that PICC line, the “lizard brain” still continues to insist that you are starving to death because you are not eating. Bowel rest cannot possibly be fun in any sense of the word. Since 7-Aug of this year, she has had nothing by mouth but water, ice chips, and crushed medications mixed with the bare minimum of pudding to make the pills palatable (sort of).

I will let you all know when we have a final date set for the surgery. I am not at all too proud to ask for your prayers, meditations, good wishes, or whatever you call them in your belief system. I am also not kidding myself. There’s a very real chance she won’t survive this intervention (about 10%, per the surgeon). So please, send her your best wishes, and light a candle if you are so inclined, on the day of her surgery.

I’ve got three Google Voice invites available. Anyone interested? Leave your email address in comments (screened, of course.)

I’ve started using GV recently, and I love it. It’s a great voice mail management application.

Somehow, life continues (to suck)

lasarina‘s car blew the engine a couple of weeks ago. It’s engine is being replaced next week. You will never guess what happened this morning.
