Fire update

9 Mar

6 cats still unaccounted for. Only animal that appears to have survived is one dog. There were 3 dogs and 8 cats. The house and contents are a total loss.

Per Laura:

We need bigger sized clothes. Gryphon is a 4X and, I think, a size 60 pants; mom is a 3X and prefers skirts and dresses; I am XL-2XL and wear 28 jeans, 52 men’s work pants; Jade wears XL and, I think, size 30 pants, but also fits 16-18 dresses (which she’d prefer some of as well). Mom wears 9 1/2-10 shoes, I think; I wear around 9 1/2W shoes; gryphon and jade wear size 10 boots, I believe.

Her paypal is fyredrago@yahoo.com and they haven’t gotten around to setting up an account at her Mom’s bank yet. Kathleen won’t be needing clothing for a few weeks, I would imagine, and sizes may change while she is hospitalized. Keep that in mind.

Kathleen

is in ICU [burn ward] at Herman Memorial with over 30% of her body burned. They expect her to be there at least a month. Please send silk or plastic flowers to Kathleen Courtney. The family needs help finding the 6 missing house cats. If anyone in the Houston area has available time to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have the address where they are currently staying, but I will not post that here. If you need it, contact me back-channel.

When it rains, it pours

8 Mar

Laura just called me. The house she shares with her Mother (my ex), and her step-father, just burned down. Mother was in house, injured, rushed to hospital, condition unknown. All pets are presumed lost according to the neighbor who called her with the news.

Edit to clarify: Kathleen, Laura’s mother, and my ex, was in the house. I have no additional details on her condition at this time.

ETA: Kathleen is in critical condition in Memorial Hermann. She has 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 30% of her body.

In memoriam

6 Mar

Our dear sweet Flirt. You will be missed. I had no idea diabetes could be an issue for dogs too.

Dear Brighid, why do you have so much faith in me?

6 Mar

Our show papillon, Flirt, is critically ill. I rushed her to the nearest vet that was still open around 12:30 today. She apparently didn’t eat last night. This morning she was lethargic, shaky, and had urinated on herself. That last happens occasionally, so it didn’t seem like to big a deal.

I went home upon hearing she didn’t seem well. I found her shaky but responsive. Decided to bathe her and take her to vet as a precaution. She crashed into deep shock post bath, and has required resuscitation once already.

You sure She never gives you more than you can handle?

======================================================

ETA: Flirt passed beyond the veil about 3:30pm. Turns out she had massive organ failure due to undiagnosed diabetes. Barbara does not know yet. I haven’t been able to reach her.

ETA 2: Barbara knows now.

News of the day [Barbara update]

5 Mar
  1. lasarina will be seen in clinic by her surgeon on Tuesday, 9-March. This is the next step toward getting the surgery scheduled. Last time we did that, we had a surgery date within about a week from that visit.
  2. She is scheduled to leave the IMU today and be moved to a regular room on the 3rd floor. ETA: Move to 3rd floor occurred at about 4:30pm.

Both of these are to be considered indicative of very significant progress. Keep up the good work, everyone! Thanks.

News of the day

2 Mar

As of this morning, the infectious diseases doctor is discontinuing all antibiotics. This is a major next step toward getting a surgery date scheduled. We are looking forward to presentation to the surgeon late next week, or early the week after.

This morning

1 Mar

New line inserted without incident. Transport was momentarily exciting. EMT fell in the rain slicked lot while unloading her at Methodist. He dropped her foot end of gurney onto his legs, but by doing so, protected her from injury. We’re back at the LTAC, getting her settled in. She’s about to get her bath.

Goddess decided to do us a favor for a change…

28 Feb

Tonight, that problematic central line just fell out. Never mind that it was sutured in place. Yes, one suture came out a couple of nights ago. But the other one was still in place. No bleeding, no problems. Just came out. So the infection source is gone.

They had to put in a regular IV into each arm to continue the IV antibiotics and meds. For the next 24 hours, there will be no TPN. That’s the biggest negative to this highly unexpected outcome. Barbara will be going to Methodist at 7:15 am on Monday to get a new central line inserted for the long term requirements until we can finally get the surgery she needs.
