Yesterday, I learned about a drug to drug interaction which occurred between two medications I took concurrently during my post operative recovery period. You may remember that I had been experiencing leg pain caused by spasms of my calf muscles.
I had done some research and decided those were likely from the prednisone depleting my potassium levels. It’s a known issue with higher doses of prednisone. Yesterday, the dermatologist who helped me with the allergic reaction to cephalosporin reached out to me. She had received a notification from my insurance company alerting her that I had been taking Cipro and prednisone concurrently.
That’s when she informed me of “a drug drug interaction of drug-induced tendinopathy” between those drugs. After further discussion, she felt that was the most likely explanation. She believed it explained the leg, foot, and ankle pain I’d been having. I had already completed the Cipro round, which I had been taking for the UTI. I took the last dose of the prednisone yesterday.
Nothing to do now except give the tendons some time to heal. Should I ever find myself in a similar situation, I’ll know better than to take those two concurrently. The life of a spoonie is ever interesting. And the journey continues.
dear lord. You’d think the pharmacist would have alerted you BEFORE taking the Cipro. Totally preventable. Take care.
