There’s another prednisone side effect I’ve been experiencing. It’s not particularly disturbing since it’s a short course. But nonetheless, I’ll mention it.
Prednisone impacts appetite, significantly. I’ve been starving, constantly, for days now. Were I a long term prednisone patient, that would be highly concerning. I was once over 260 pounds in weight. That was not good. How I lost that weight wasn’t good either, but that’s irrelevant to today’s update.
I weigh approximately 180 pounds. At 5′ 9″ in height, BMI says that I am overweight. I disagree with that assessment, and I could go into a whole rant about BMI in general. I will save you from that rant. Suffice it to say, I don’t think BMI is terribly useful.
That said, I tend to be conscious of my weight because of my history. I don’t ever want to be that unhealthy again. Nor do I want to do the unhealthy things I did that resulted in that weight loss. I’ll be off the prednisone in about a week or so. I won’t gain a lot of weight in that time. In the short term, I am respecting my body’s demand for more calories. Beside the prednisone, after all, I am recovering from surgery.
The journey continues.
My daughter had Hodgkin’s lymphoma at 17 (now she’s 29 and has been clean for 10 years), and got prednisone as part of the treatment. Went from tall and spare to tall and large (not exactly fat, but burly).

My late wife received steroids (I don’t really remember which) as part of treatment for lupus. Side effects were horrible for her. I’m sorry your daughter went through that. Blessings

It’s good to have a handle on these things. You are still exemplary at self-care, Janet! It is an art, I think.

It is. One that is often derided in this capitalist society. 🫂

Except for, of course, the ones who want to sell “self-care” to people. You know the real thing, though.
