I am fairly recently self-diagnosed as an autist. I am still coming to terms with all that has meant for me throughout my life.
A very big part of being autistic is difficulty communicating with so-called neurotypicals. There’s an umbrella term for those of us who are not typical in our style of thinking and communication. We tend to call ourselves neurodivergent.
In contrast, the term “neurodivergent” describes someone who processes information in a different way. Autistic people and those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and similar conditions sometimes identify as neurodivergent.
Because our brains work differently to most people, we are often considered rude, when we just prefer directness in communication. That’s not the only challenge we face being neurodivergent. The piece I linked below is an excellent summary, presented as a sonnet. It describes what it’s like to live as an autist in a neurotypical world.
Today, thanks to Ali over at Scotties Playtime, I was introduced to Abhijit Naskar, who calls himself an Autistic Neuroscientist. I definitely enjoyed his recent piece titled Sonnet on The Spectrum. So without further ado, here is that piece.
The journey continues.
Thank you, Janet!🌹
