Today is the International Day of Peace. This day was established by the United Nations in 1981.
The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution 36/37, the General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”
I hadn’t heard about this until today. Thank you Ali, at Scottie’s Playtime, for bringing it to my attention.
This is a particularly apt time to celebrate peace, given recent events in Lebanon, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Yes, I said genocide. What Israel is doing is no better than what Hitler did to Jews during the Holocaust. History will indeed judge Bibi harshly. Never mind the US continuing to support him in his criminal actions.
Of course, the Russian invasion of Ukraine stands as yet another example of senseless war and aggression. At least the US is currently on the side of right in that conflict. But that support is tentative. Should Trump regain the White House, it would evaporate overnight. As he himself has told us repeatedly, he idolizes Putin, and other world leaders of a similar ilk.
I apologize. I started off hoping to celebrate Peace Day, and ended up listing some of the worst current threats to world peace. Blessings.
The journey continues.
Thank you for getting the message out, Janet! I don’t even always remember, until I look at the Peace History newsletter for the 21st, and there it is. There is almost nothing out there about it. The day made a bit of a splash during the years of the US invasion of Iraq (when I first learned there was an international day,) but then it faded after Pres. Obama took office. sigh
The two things I try to remember every day, are:
I am chatty this morning! I need to do a run, but I don’t really want to. 🤭💜
