This past Wednesday morning, I experienced another period of continuing palpitations. My cardiac team got back to me this morning, and let me know that what was happening was premature atrial contractions.
Premature atrial contractions (commonly referred to as PACs) are a relatively common source of cardiac arrhythmia. They aren’t generally considered dangerous, and usually require no intervention. It’s interesting, to me, that they are also generally asymptomatic. That’s interesting mainly because I feel them happening. I can feel my heart rhythm varying from normal. According to the above Wikipedia link, beta blockers are sometimes prescribed for symptomatic PACs.
My cardiac team doesn’t feel that’s necessary at this time, and now that I understand what’s actually occurring, I tend to agree. I can relax when it happens, and go on with life. To be entirely honest, I was having some fairly significant anxiety around these occurrences.
There’s a really good chance that most of what sent me to the hospital on 18-June was an extended occurrence of PACs, mixed in with some AFib. Still, two hours was too long to ignore it, so I will continue to be vigilant.
The journey continues.
I’m glad you have an answer. Between rhythm happenings and anxiety, a person can give themselves some real trouble if they don’t know what’s happening. Keep taking good care, Janet!
