Abortion ban set for debate in state Senate committee
BATON ROUGE, La. A lawmaker sponsoring a near-total ban on abortion in Louisiana says he will resist any efforts to weaken the bill to include exceptions for rape and incest cases.
Senator Ben Nevers is sponsor of legislation similar to an abortion ban passed into law this year in South Dakota. The only exceptions are cases in which the mother’s life is in danger. Doctors found guilty of performing abortions would face up to 10 years in prison and fines of 100-thousand dollars.
Nevers says he filed the measure because he thought President Bush’s two recent appointments to the Supreme Court made it more likely that the high court will overturn the 1973 Roe versus Wade ruling that established a right to an abortion.
The Senate’s health committee is scheduled to debate Nevers’ bill today.
